Joe Smith is Professor of Environment and Society and Head of the Department of Geography at The Open University. His research interests lie in the history of environmental politics, public engagement and the media, and the politics of consumption. His research practice has a strongly collaborative and interdisciplinary quality and an experimental edge. Joe has designed and facilitated numerous seminars for environment specialists and senior media decision-makers since the mid 1990s, and advised on over 30 hours of BBC broadcasting. Together with Renata Tyszczuk he convenes the Mediating Change group. Among its initiatives is the Culture and Climate Change series with Renata Tyszczuk, Robert Butler and Hannah Bird.
